Spiderman 2 ()

Meh. =\

I, Robot ()

That was... too easy. Too neat and tidy. Spooner had no motivation to be suspicious of the robots. Absolutely none that I could see.

Ejaculate Inject nannites into a big spherical representation of a girl computer thing. Yeah, yeah. Tres clever innuendo. We get it. WHO THE HELL LET RICK BERMAN IN ON THIS?! *ahem* *clear throat* *smooth hair*

Asimov annoys me. In my mind, a machine intelligence that tries to approximate human intelligence is called an "android", not a "robot". A robot only has specific functions and usually can't approximate the human gait. It also doesn't think or adapt. Or if it seemingly can "think", it's because the solutions are pre-written and doing it becomes a matter of searching its knowledge base and executing the result at the leaf node.

And it's written in Sicstus Prolog. XD

Bourne Supremacy ()

I thought it was marginally better than Bourne Identity which turned into Born Yesterday as soon as the girl comes along. On the whole, the action wasn't as intense as in Identity, but there was no idiotic love-interest crap that made no sense. I loved Pamela Landy's character.

God, Eomer is SKINNY without his armour.

I do *love* the Berman comment! Ah, for the days when Trek told original stories with class and a point...

And I'm really tired of technophobia passing itself as Big Message SF...

*sigh* Yeah, I want to break out the TNG DVDs and watch "The Inner Light" and "The Offspring" again.

sigh... "The Inner Light" - that was just about perfect.

I hadn't seen a TNG episode in years, and last weekend caught "Redemption" at the gym. I'd forgotten just how good TNG was - till Braga started writing most of the episodes that last season and a half. Such a loss...

Asimov was writing before the word "android" was in common usage, I think. Certainly before robotics was "mainstream".

Anyways, Asimov was more exploring how attempting to have such cut-and-dry rules really didn't work--there are too many grey areas in life. At least, as far as I could tell.

And there are automatons that are walking, attempting to mimic the human gait, and their creators call them "robots". It's probably just how you think of the words (I consider android a subset of robots--namely, those that attempt to be human, not just emulate humanity (c.f. Data on Star Trek)).

The movie was only inspired by what Asimov wrote, thankfully. Most of Asimov's stories would have made horrible movies--and that movie wasn't really like anything Asimov wrote.

Did you not read my review of the movie when I posted it? :D :D :D

Nope, I avert my eyes on other people's movie review posts if I haven't seen it in case there are spoilers. It's not so much that it "ruins" the movie for me, sometimes it makes me less cranky about it =D, but it certainly affects what I think of the movie sometimes.

I sat there until almost the end of the movie before I figured out why Eomer looked so familiar.

in my mind - a robot was always just any animatronic thingy.

an android is a robot that looks human/humanish

a cyborg is an android with actual human tissue incoporated.

thus all androids are robots, but not all robots are androids.

that's how i sleep at night at any rate :-P
