Of Mouses and Men

weather: rain
outside: 6.5°C

This has been on my mind for a while.

If you're talking about the rodent, the plural is "mice". However, if you're talking about a computer input device, the plural is "mouses".

A less unusual plural is "mouse devices", but that sounds a bit "heavy".

It can be a useful distinction.

Anecdote: in my company, some people use "Datümer" as the plural of "Datum" (date, as in the date that something happens). That's not a word, but the proper German plural of "Datum" is "Daten", which is the word for "data". And since it can often be useful to distinguish between "dates" and "data", some have come up with a way to do so!

I rarely need to use the plural, I'm usually saying "click", "point" or "mouse over" or something.

I can imagine needing to distinguish "dates" and "data"... they're almost inseparable.

Nope, wrong. 1 mouse, many mice. 12 years working in IT & never heard of "mouses" except from the mouths of 2 year olds.

Ditto. Although that great bastion of information (Wikipedia) seems to suggest that both are allowed. I'll be sticking with "mice" though.

I'm not sure I even have much occasion to use the plural of computer mouse, but my gut tells me I would say, and have said, mice in conversation.
