Break Up News

[weather|sunny and cloudy]

We just found out that a long-time highschool buddy of ours split with his girlfriend. *sigh* They had been together for 7 years.

She got a job near San Francisco and he busted his ass to try to find a job there too. At the end of last year and the first part of this year, he passed up some pretty good offers here in Vancouver because he wanted to be in San Fran with her. The ones he passed up on weren't great offers, but in light of the economic downturn, they were pretty decent.

At the end of September, he finally got something and moved down there. His parting e-mail was bouncie, optimistic, full of hope and mentioned that his girlfriend who was already working there was a large factor in his decision to hold out for a job opportunity there.

Poor guy must've been dumped just as he got off the plane... because Husband Guy's Best Man told him today that they broke up "2 months ago". Apparently, she'd been seeing someone else.

OMG that is freakin' LOW..!!!!!

He could've gotten a decent job in Vancouver if she'd had the balls to tell him she was seeing someone else. That's just ... LOW...

At least it sounded like a good company with interesting and challenging work - Bluetooth consulting and compliance verification. Quite a few of our highschool friends are in his area too, so we're not quite as worried that he'll be totally alone in a new city and dealing with the merry hell of emotions of a new job on top of the Slime Girl BS.

I feel so badly for B.

Hey, I know Bluetooth... they were one of the companies we were trying to sign a contact with, when I was doing the program manager thing. I also hear they are a good outfit.

Bluetooth isn't a company though. It's a short-range wireless solution...

Hmmm... Apparently it wasn't one of Fast Eddy's projects then. However, I know the term Bluetooth was thrown around a lot. It's a wireless technology, as in 802.14? Must have been Bruce or John that was talking about them then. Or perhaps it was one of contracts that wanted to manage Bluethooth devices with our software. Regardless, it was supposed to be an up and coming area to be in. I would agree... In fact, I see portable computing killing companies like Dell, Intel, and Microsoft unless they migrate away from PC devices during the next 5-10 years.

Two years ago the Boston Globe featured an editorial in its Sunday edition called, “Valley of The Male Dolls.” Essentially, it was discussed the “dating culture” in the San Francisco Bay area. Because of dotcom mania, the area flooded with “Geeks” who suddenly found they had more money that they could reasonably spend. However, because the job market to was high tech, and many techies were men, there wasn’t anyone to date. On figure quoted was something like a 20:1 female to male ratio. A lot of guys really turned up the hear to attract women, and flaunted Mercedes and Rolex watches… The article was describing this frenzy of guys throwing drinks and gifts any women in bars. Some of the women in the articles made mixed reactions. Some felt it was great, because they could go out all night and never pay for a thing. Then pick up the guy they liked best, and dump him in a week or two to get another high spender. Then of course, there was the opposite side of coin. Some women complained that they could never go out without being mobbed by guys trying to pick them up. I guess my point is San Francisco is reportedly a difficult dating culture and I don’t think your friend’s experience is unique.

That’s a really tough situation.

Yeah, I'm sure that the "girl dumps boy after boy relocates to be with her" scenario isn't unique either. It sucks all the same... =P
