Ditched Opera 6.0

As much as I hate IE, I got pissed off by the time Opera crashed for the third time within an hour and a half. I'm going to try getting Netscape 6.2 again.

Ha, I be Netscaped now. =)

Aside from not staying functional on my machine, I didn't like the look of Opera either. I like to make my buttons as small and everything as "out of the way" as possible (die, useless toolbars, DIE DIE DIE!!!). I make my viewing area as large as possible. I like seeing everything on one screen.

I'm using Netscape's Fog City theme. All the buttons and things are tiny, exactly the way I want it. =)

Use Mozilla!!! :)

It's like Netscape 6.x, but with less crap and more cool!

I have Mozilla... it takes forever to start up and it acts strangely with Chinese characters (won't play nicely with both Big5 and GB at the same time). =P I'll probably only use it to verify DOM support for what I'm doing, but Nutscrape will be my default.

Somehow, MSN Messenger is willing to use Opera, but not Nutscrape as the default browser. I know, I know, I should ditch MSN Messenger too. Very tempted, except Hotmail hasn't pissed me off much yet and it has the super-exclusive junk mail filter.

Yahoo mail has better junk mail filters, actually, and they give you 3x as much space. Yahoo also allows POP/SMTP support so you can read your email without logging into the website.

Mozilla should actually be faster to start than Netscape 6.x. Do you use the quicklaunch option? And what version do you have? Y'know, Mozilla supports tabs, just like in Opera, which is nifty. (Random digression, I know, but it's the coolest feature...)

As far as the Chinese support goes: I've had pretty good luck with foreign language support in Moz, actually. I can generally view Chinese pages without any problems (you just have to go into prefs and make sure the language packs are loaded). If there's a specific page you know gives it fits, I'd be curious to see it. If it really doesn't work I'd like to know... :)

Re: Moz version

I got the latest download... a month ago.

Re: Quick Launch

Nope, I disabled that. I didn't quite like the idea of having the process still hanging around.

You mean like the way IE's always running..? ;)

You might want to try getting it again; 0.9.6 was released on Nov. 20 and fixes and/or improves a bunch of things over 0.9.5. Then again, there's another release due in around a week... and again, 0.9.7 has a rather large list of improvements associated with it.

Out of curiousity, if you like Opera, why not use 5.x? It seemed fast and stable, so maybe just going back to that would've fixed your problems.

That's why I'm trying to not touch it as much as possible.

Yeah, I think I will.

I don't like Opera. It doesn't "get out of my way" enough =)

Possibly... yeah, I could try that too.

I've gotten pissed off by every browser out there. Why do they need to do illegal things? Why can't they play nice? IE crashes on me, NS crashes on me, and I don't like opera. I am just SOL. :-)

Have you tried Mozilla? Might be worth a boo =) Nick says it's better than NS.
Dec. 12th, 2001 11:44 am (UTC)
no, it'd take FOREVER to download on my dial up connection. maybe when I get a cable modem. :-)

Ah, I see... =P

I used to use Netscape, but when I got a cablemodem, I was told I had to use IE. Therefore, I've been using Explorer for the past year in a half.

I don't mind Opera so much... turn on individual windows and turn off all those tabs, and it's pretty decent. I don't even notice the ads at the top anymore.

Besides, when it does crash, you have the option of firing it up in the same places you were already at (unless you were in the middle of a session or something.)

Failing that, I use Mozilla for most anything I can't do in Opera, and only touch IE for those "optimized" pages that won't run in anything else. I won't touch Netscape 6 because it's much much slower than Mozilla nightly builds somehow....
