This is the post that the power failure blew away:

There are times when I feel like, the next person to confuse these concepts will die in my claws.

Schizophrenia does not mean Multiple Personality Disorder.

It's just that the word "schizophrenia" comes from Greek words meaning, roughly, "split mind". But it's splitting of the mind FROM REALITY, not splitting of the mind from itself. It used to also be called Dementia Precox ("youthful insanity") because the onset of Schizophrenia is usually in the late teens to early twenties.

The three basic kinds of Schizophrenia are Paranoid, Disorganized and Catatonic where symptoms include severe delusions, auditory/visual/olfactory/tactile hallucinations, disjointed speech, immobility, partial immobility ("waxy flexibility") among others.

About two-thirds of all Schizophrenics are functional members of society and only about one-third require 24x7 care. Out of the patients in the "functional members of society" category, you probably wouldn't even know there was anything different about them in about half of those. The other half might display minor to noticeably quirky behaviour, like suddenly say strange things loudly to nobody while walking down the street.

I met one fellow, "Randall", who was Schizophrenic, when I worked at the front desk of a local YMCA many summers ago. He never said anything, just traded me his membership card for a lock every morning, went for his swim and traded again when he left. Most people would smile and chat to varying degrees, some didn't say anything to me. After a while, he started saying "hi" to me and smiled once or twice. I never thought anything of it.

It wasn't until one day he must've forgotten to take his medication or he was having a particularly bad day that I found out. He apparently got into a tiff with another member in the locker room. One of the Y Program Directors told me that someone either bumped into him or clapped him on the shoulder as a friendly gesture and he flipped. Randall gets really upset at physical contact with another human being and he also hatedhatedhated women.

*shrug* Maybe that's why some of the other staff looked so surprised when he said hello to me.

Multiple Personality Disorder is fascinating too. It's when one individual "turns into" different people, complete with different brain wave patterns. So they can't be just acting; you can't simulate different brain wave patterns. It's almost as if there are characteristics they so badly need, that have been unnaturally and unhealthily suppressed, that these characteristics derive enough energy to gather their own separate soul.

Anti-social behaviour is not when someone always keeps to themself all the time.

Anti-social means acting/interacting in a way that creates negative reactions from other people. Being anti-social is NOT removing oneself from a social situation. It's actually PUTTING oneself IN the a social situation by doing something that others considers "bad". It's criminal or destructive behaviour like stealing or beating people up.

Staying away from social situations, being a loner, keeping to oneself is called Avoidant behaviour.

You must know that Schizophrenia was a catch-all diagnosis for decades, and that non-medical people still think of it as an apt way of self-diagnosing people. "God, what are you, going all schizo or something?"

As for the anti-social def'n - I have to agree. Going out into a social situation and being grumpt is anti-social. Avoiding the social situation isn't.

Re: anti-social

Bungo's cousins call him anti-social all the time. >={

"Mass Homocide" really would not look good on my resume... even if it were suffixed with "of stupid people who deserve it".

Nothing really... a while back, ntang blew a minor hairy at badkarma_05 about kanji. I responded that I get annoyed at people over little things too... being a Member of the International Curmudgeon League since I was 7, that would be characteristic of me =)

I thought of those two yesterday and thought I would casually add it to my "Annoyed At Humans For:" list.

"Blew a minor hairy?" A lot of people seem to have that reaction to me.
