Las Vegas

weather: sunny/cloudy
mood: pensive

There's talk about a Lost Wages trip sometime late this year.

I've been to Vegas once before - Victoria Day long weekend, 1996 with Kat (long time good friend of mine). I even still have the text journal entries, I should dig them out and post them. We stayed at the Excalibur and it was fantastic fun. We weren't much into gambling. We did play some slots and I think I came out $8 ahead in total.

We went mostly to see the shows - King Arthur's Tournament (the one where you eat a cornish game hen with your bare hands); Sigfried & Roy; the Lipizaner Stallions; and I thought we saw something else too, but I don't remember now. Maybe we spent the entire rest of the time just walking around. That's one thing about a Vegas trip that seems to be universal: be prepared to WALK. A LOT.

My WishList of Things To See if/when we go:

  • The Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton - Tix: USD$25 + tax.
  • Mystère, Cirque du Soleil at the Treasure Island - Tix: USD$80 + tax. We need to get tickets way farking early for this. Like a few months in advance.
  • Fremont Street Experience - it's a canopy over the street and it's a light/laser show to music. latraviata says it's free. =)
  • Hoover Dam - I think this is a little ways away from Las Vegas itself...
  • O, Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio - Tix: USD$110.00 and USD$90.00 + tax. piyomomo's suggestion.
  • Blue Man Group at the Luxor - Tix: USD$82.50 + tax. piyomomo's suggestion
  • The Pirate Show - just outside the Treasure Island. This is a free show at specific times, but you kinda have to go early to get a good spot.
  • The Bellagio Fountains - I think this is a free show at specific times.

I wouldn't mind seeing The Tournament of Kings (tix: $44.66) at the Excalibur again. But I WANNA SIT IN THE WHITE SECTION!!! Front row, if at all possible. Or if we can't, then front row in any other section.

I think we should try to book as much as we can ahead of time before we go. If you wait until you get there, things will be sold out, you wander aimlessly from hotel to hotel trying to find the ticket booth (because we won't have internet connection when we get there), you'll get crappy seats, etc.

Yup, it's now called Tournament of Kings. walking shouldn't be a problem since the last few times i went, there were more free shuttles, bus routes, trains built between hotels. We might see O instead of mystere.. depends on juky... but the blue man group for sure. =)))

had to post again cuz had to change 'not' to 'now' heh...

Re: free shuttles/transportation

That should be good, but there'll probably be a lineup to use them.

Re: O

What's "O"? and "Blue Man Group"?

I'm okay with that. Mystère is hella expensive, so I don't mind missing it if you guys want to see other things.

hmm, i liked the star trek experience a lot. i remember the tix i got were some combo tix where you can go to both the experience and some other show that rocked you in its seats (maybe have been at caesar's palace) for $25 or so. so, maybe check into that? the other thing is, the hilton where the experience is not that close to the strip and we ended up taking a taxi to the other show to make it in time.

all those cirque shows are so expensive! but they're very good.

fremont street is very cool (and fortunately, free!). just check the schedule.

i haven't been to the hoover dam...might be 45 mins away? i'm not really sure.

Re: combo tix

Hmmm... I'll check that out, thanks =) I have a feeling that it was a promotional thing when it first started up, but bonus is good =)

Re: Cirque

Yeah, and they sell out really fast too. =P

Re: Fremont Street

Oh cool! I didn't know it was free. =)

Enjoy your trip to Las Vega. Of course, I think it's America at it worst... but I'm just a prude like that. See Blue Man Group if you get the chance.

Of course, I think it's America at it worst...

Hmm, I've thought about that before. First of all, Las Vegas is in the middle of a desert - imagine all the electricity and water that place consumes! Second, the food wastage that occurs there is just horrendous. The portions are huge - sure, a good percentage of Americans *can* finish them (hey I like the portion sizes too!), but most visitors from elsewhere don't have a hope in hell.

Wow, they don't let Chinese people mix with the white bread trailer dwellers? ;)

I can't believe the prices for some of those things - no wonder the big casinos give those show tickets away only to the big losers...
May. 6th, 2002 06:43 pm (UTC)
Eh, I've been sitting in the white section all my life. Let me tell you... it's no thrill.

If/when you go to Las Vegas, make sure you check out the Fountains of Bellagio. They are truly breathtaking, and their beauty is enhanced even further at night.

The pirate battle outside Treasure Island shouldn't be missed either. Although it's not very romantic compared to the fountains...

The only crappy thing about these free outdoor shows is that you gotta get there early to get a good spot, and standing there in 40 degree C weather for an extended period of time is NOT recommended.
May. 6th, 2002 07:04 pm (UTC)
Both on my list.

We didn't get to see the pirate battle last time (not quite organized enough) and we were bummed. I'd never even heard of the Bellagio until a few weeks ago when diannaandbill wrote about it.

I couldn't help but to post a reply! I'm heading back to Vegas for my second visit in June. Staying at the Bellagio -- as everyone said, must see the dancing fountains! At night, they're set to go off either every 15 minutes or half hour. "O" is fantastic. If you've never been to any Cirque du Soleil show, in my opinion, this is their best one yet! ^_^ You should book tickets now. I'm debating whether to take my friend to see "O" or Mystere. Never seen Mystere.

Ah cool, something new for me to check out .. Freemont Street experience.

Enjoy your trip! =D

Heh, thanks for dropping by and let me know if you find something else cool on your second trip! We're not going until almost the end of the year, so we have lots of time to plan =)

Well you realize that I JUST WENT to Vegas. :-)
1. Star Trek experience... was pretty cool (I'm not even a Trekkie). We got a $3pp discount because my brother is a local.
2. Fremont St. I thought it was pretty cool too. It shows on the hour starting at dusk. Other than that there's not much downtown.
3. Pirate Show - You don't want to get too close or you'll get wet. We were on the walkway in between and could see fine.
4. Bellagio fountains - it's hard to figure out when they're going to go off. But they were the coolest.
5. Red Rock canyon is also pretty cool. It's to the NW of Vegas. You can go climbing on all the rocks (at your own risk). It costs $5 per car.
6. 99c breakfast at Suncoast.. :-)
7. The Rio's show in the sky is pretty cool. Decent at least. They toss mardi gras beads at you. :-)

How recently? I just went in the last week of March! :)

99c breakfast at Suncoast..

Hey, with all the buffets that are available in LV, there's simply NO reason to go to McDonalds!

I used to work for the company that managed BMG/Vegas and O. It's definately worth the money to go see them. Have a really good time. I've always wanted to go to Vegas...
May. 7th, 2002 11:38 am (UTC)
They say "O" is the best. Of course poor man like me never get to see shows like that. My friend said Blue Man is hilarious in its own unique way.

I'm quite sure Pirate show and the Bellagio Fountains happen once every hour... you will know it's about to start when you see a crowd gathering around the area.

But I WANNA SIT IN THE WHITE SECTION!!! Front row, if at all possible. Or if we can't, then front row in any other section.
Calmly walk to the front of the line, introduce yourself and casually mention your reservation (something like "I'm Princess of Wales and my assistant made a front row reservation for me") after the famous 50-buck handshake, you can sit almost anywhere you want. I'm pretty sure most hostesses will accept the nice litte handshake, although for popular shows like "O" may be, just may be, you'll need a 100-buck handshake. Heck, if you do the 1000-buck handshake you can even sit on stage :) Anyways, sometimes (mind you, I said sometimes) it's not that good to have front row seats, the same logic why no one sits front row to watch movies apply here. It is always better to sit at the booths if they have those, IMO. The wheels do turn smoother with some grease :)

Hoover Dam will cost you the whole day, probably back at night, so might want to skip that if you don't have too much time on your hand.

think we should try to book as much as we can ahead of time before we go.
yes, that would be a very good idea. True not just for the one show you mentioned, I hear (remember poor chap like myself can't afford luxury like this)popular shows like the white tiger gig at Mirage is sold out months before. And I thought the white tiger thing was getting old...
May. 7th, 2002 12:09 pm (UTC)
i hear blue man group replaced sigfried and roy for being the best show in vegas.
for blue man, you don't want to sit in the first 8 rows.
