World Cup Soccer Pool

</td>
weather: sunny/cloudy
mood: gleeful
music: Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D

So, I somehow got talked into entering the company's World Cup Soccer Pool. I haven't followed Soccer in years and years and years - just to give you an idea: I was a quasi-fan when Diego Armando Maradona was in his prime, France still sucked and Cameroon always made it to the top three. I was very little back then.

The teams and rankings have changed quite a bit. *shrug* I told the guys, "I have no idea what I'm doing, I'm just picking blind". But it's only $10, so I thought what the hey... =)

Here are my picks:

Re:
Heh, I don't usually participate in Hockey Pools because you kinda have to know the players. I don't know _anything_ about the players. =P

Just pick USA for everything. Who cares if we're not playing that round! Thing of it as a write in candidate. :)

Clearly you're insane. USA has much better take out food than China. Therefore, we are the superior culture. Great Wall by butt, I bet it hasn't served over a bilion. ;)

My dad made a couple hundred bucks in his office pool during the NCAA basketball tournament, but then again, he knew his stuff pretty well!

You've made many good picks! I would put Japan over Russia, but that's just me :) Germany isn't a very good team this year, Portugal is the real dark horse this year. Like most HK guys, for some reason I want to see England advance, but Group F is really cut-throat. Brazil said Ronaldo is in condition, so now the 3 R's are complete, but we will just have to see. And I think USA will advance too.

on a side note, if I were to bet in Vegas, I would bet on Portugal taking the cup, because realistically they're a tough team to beat, and the pay-out is really high.

That was a tough decision for me too... Russia is statistically the better team, but Japan has (sorta) home turf advantage. But if you look at the match-ups, in my scenario, Japan plays Brazil and unless there's a big fat upset-and-a-half, Brazil is definitely moving on.

I know, that group was hard... but I could only pick two and the reality is Argentina has to be picked =) Sweden is unbeaten in Europe in the exhibition games this year...

Oh well, we don't really get odds anyway, it's just 50/30/20 for the top three scorers for the entire tournament. So, it's really not in my best interest to bet on one upset. =}

Yup, that's what most people will pick, based on reality... but I can dream, right? :) a few English stars were injured, so I guess this is not their year (again).

Well y'know, if they'd stop fighting and actually play the game, maybe they wouldn't be injured come World Cup time =) =) I'm kidding. =)
