The Ring

weather: cloudy
outside: 11°C
mood: impressed
music: Renée Flemming - Norma, Casta Diva (Bellini)

Sorry, Husband Guy's wedding ring is still lost. =P =}

But, I saw The Ring tonight with Husband Guy. It was a good ghost story, a good goose chase, really messed up people. I can kinda see why it was a huge hit in Japan.

No spoilers here, but it's a good one to see.

The real reason for us going to the movies tonight, though, was to try out my "Famous Night Out" gift certificates redeemed from my Royal Bank Visa Classic II points. MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH BETTER than the lame AirMiles 2-for-1 piece'o schite that you can only use on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (no weekends and no Tuesdays), no matinées and not on a movie that has just opened on the Friday night you want to use it. *OCH* =O

"Famous Night Out" gives you 2 free General Admission tickets, 2 regular drinks and 1 regular popcorn - they're treated like gift certificates. We really, truly, honest-to-goodness did not touch our wallets all night. Point-wise, it works out to be the same - I have to use up a little over double the points to get this as opposed to the AirMiles ones. I can't get as many of them or get them as often as the AirMiles ones. But the ability to use them more than tips it in favour of getting these instead.

Did you see the US version? I mean, if you did, then that doesn't necessarily explain why it was a hit in Japan... this is, after all, a remake, with a modified plot, different actors, etc. etc. etc. I'm sure they bear a resemblance to each other but I'm not entirely sure they're all that similar either. (Although I'm hoping to find out! I just found out recently the Japanese release is playing in NYC soon, so if I can I'm going to try to see both and compare. That would be cool, if I can manage it.)

That Famous Night Out deal is probably worth close to $40! (since a drink is around $3, and popcorn is around $3 as well...) But you have to spend $2500 to get one? That's a lot of money... do you pay an annual fee?

I still like the Airmiles one cuz I can get it for $1000 of spending, and no annual fee. It does come out the same in the end, since with the Airmiles you save about $14. So the savings are the same... but buying popcorn and drinks at the theatre is really expensive... so I like saving on just the tickets.

We use the Airmiles ones on Sunday nights (yeah, it's valid Sunday-Thursday, but not on Tuesday) to save $14, but gift certificates (around $8) on the nights we can't use the Airmiles one (usually Friday and Saturday). Using gift certificates alone, we save $10 per night.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time we paid regular price (almost $28 now!) for a movie... =)

Yeah, it is. I don't expect to get more than maybe a few of them a year. It would have been WAY worth my while if I knew about this before the wedding. I would be swimming in free movies =D

do you pay an annual fee?

Yes, $15/year.

Personally, I'm quite "cheap" when it comes to watching movies (Well it depends on the movie - I'd easily pay full price for Star Wars, but that's me). I often watch movies at matinee prices, or better yet, at Tinseltown where it's cheaper than any Silvercity theatre.

So I won't spend $25 at the theatre in one shot; I don't even like popcorn very much. Instead, I'd much rather redeem my points for a $25 gift certificate at Zellers or Bay to buy you-know-what!

You a movie fan? I can get hookups from the office landlord.

I can get the same Famous Night Out deal for $27.85. They usually retail at $36.50. Or alternatively, one ticket valid anytime without the popcorn and drinks at $9.60.

I can get a better deal from Cineplex Odeon. Cineplex Odeon Cinemas Platinum Combo: Includes two Platinum Plus admissions, two small soft drinks, one regular popcorn for $24.00 (reg. retail price varies). Or alternatively, one Platinum Plus ticket (valid anytime) at $8.55.

I can get cheaper Cineplex tickets too. They're the Platinum series but they are only are valid for admission to any Cineplex Odeon movie 10 days after its release date. They go for $6.95.

Re: movies
We don't have very many Cineplex theatres left in Vancouver unfortunately... Famous Players' Silvercity ate up all the business it seems.

If you mass order Famous Players' tickets you can get them for $8.16 a piece.
