Pondering a New Username

weather: light drizzle
outside: 7°C
mood: pensive

I've been thinking about a new LJ username for myself. Here are a few of my thoughts so far, let me know what you think:

  • casta_diva

Casta Diva is the suprano aria in Vincenzo Bellini's opera, Norma. This is probably my first choice right now, but I'm not sure...

  • la_doyenne

doyen was a Word of the Day in January. It comes from the French, meaning "exalted expert" and it's pronounced "dwah-YEN". I'm not really an expert in anything, but it's just a username, right? =)

There is an LJ user doyenne already, she's not very active and hasn't posted a quiz since August. =S At pne's suggestion, I AYT'ed her to see if she's still using her journal (maybe she's active in the communities). It shouldn't be confusing at all if I take La Doyenne. It doesn't look like we'd be involved in the same communityspace anyway.

  • quietude

"A state of quiet." I just love this word.

  • applejade

I don't know how confusing this would be because apple_jade is my Chinese journal. It would be neat to have my English and Chinese journals kinda match... but then, it's kinda dorky as well - like when a couple wear the same outfit in public. *ick*

  • jade_lin

Not very imaginative, but it would do.

pne suggested wifegal =) which is a cute idea, but I think I'll try not to use a "Generic Human" username this time. I was up to my ears in wedding when I created this journal in February 2001 and all I could think to call myself was "the bride" =)

Yeah, names are a big deal to me. I took over a week to name a cactus - I went to the trouble of watching a movie (or trying to watch a movie) just for name research purposes. I think I'll be hosting an International Nomenclature Convention when I name my children.

I guess I could make a poll, but polls don't encourage discussion.

[Update - December 02, 1024h]

Now everyone is telling me to keep bride =) I guess it makes sense. The very first commandment in Marketing/PR is "Thou shalt not change thy name nor logo."

seditionMy Favorite Mike was the one who told me that it was time to "let go". =P

ooh i really love bride but i like casta diva too :) but my favoreit is bride- its so classic and simple without any of that underscore thing that most LJs have now because all the other names are taken.

I know, I like bride too. It's my trademark now =)

It's just that some people have said that I should let go of it because I'm not the bride anymore =P

I say go with bride as well -- that's what we all know you as :) And I agree with soirdeparis about the underscore thing.

It's just that some people have said that I should let go of it because I'm not the bride anymore =P

Tell them they can take a long walk off a short pier :D

On the other hand, if you don't feel comfortable identifying with that name any more, then that's an acceptable reason for changing the name.

Of the three you gave, I'd perhaps vote for "(la_)doyenne". (Heck, maybe doyenne wouldn't mind giving you her journal if she hasn't posted for ages... did you try asking her? No underscore in that name.)

And I think you shouldn't use both applejade and apple_jade... too confusing.

On second thoughts, make sure you really don't mind being known as "the oldest example of a category" (Merriam Webster) :D

polls and discussion
I guess I could make a poll, but polls don't encourage discussion.

Well, kind of -- if you have a poll in an entry, then people can still respond to the entry, so there can be discussion alongside the poll.

Re: polls and discussion
That's true, but it's easier to just click and not bother typing =)

If you get rid of bride I want it!!!!!
Dec. 2nd, 2002 10:18 am (UTC)
Heh =) I'd probably get it to forward, which means it would still have to belong to me... sowwie =P

keep bride! ;p
I'll always associate your LJ username as 'bride!' Like everyone else, I think its a simple and beautiful name.

But if you're still inclined to change it, I like casta_diva ... it evokes a 'strong' name and image.

*chants from a distance: keep bride! keep bride! *

Re: keep bride! ;p
*sigh* This is going to end up like my haircut... can't decide what I want, so I keep saying I want to cut it, but haven't moved on it for the last 6 months =}

I agree: keep "bride" :-)

How about "bride" but in a different language. Get a selection of them and choose the one you like the most based on acoustic beauty or something else? For instance, in Japanese, yome or yume. (kinda neat since it's like a homonym with "dream" as well) In gaelic: brìdeach.

Good luck.. ;)
Dec. 2nd, 2002 10:52 am (UTC)
Could do. But that would still make it a "Generic Human" username. =)

And you can't usernames can't have special characters in it, so that rules out a lot of foreign languages.

Generic human, true. Still... my name is "Aki" and in certain countries, it's quite a popular name. In Vancouver, I have yet to meet someone with the same name as me - closest was a wonderfully chipper guy named "Zaki" - and have been told by quite a few people how cool my name is. Generic and exotic don't have to be oxymorons.

Also, I'm not sure, but after the name-change, if you choose to do so, transferring all journal entries from one account to the other is going to be a pain unless there's a tool that's already available (and unless it can be done server-side, the data transfer may hit the server hard)

Anyways, I think the name "bride" is just lovely, just like everyone else :) The name has got a story and it's very easy to remember. By no means is it an "empty name". You've spent a lot of time building an online identity around a name and unless you want to start over, sometimes it may not be worth it.

It's an available LJ service now. =)

What you say is absolutely true. Thanks for your feedback =)

I am glad you decided to keep bride as your lj user name...it has meaning and a story..much better than people who just pick something out of a hat...

Dec. 3rd, 2002 11:54 am (UTC)
*slips in late* ^^;;;;
I agree with the others. I like bride the best, because it does have a story behind it. ^^ *has been sick and out of the loop ^^;* But if you would like me to pick from the names you listed, I choose casta_Diva ^^

Hey there, hope you're feeling better =)

Thanks for the input =)

i like bride!

as i understand it, user names that have not been used in a while are usually not reassigned since their old comments/posts would then be attributed to the new user and that's too confusing. so, it's not done. so, even if doyenne gave you her account, i doubt you want to go back and delete all the entries she made in communities or comments to other users.

Bride is a cool name! applejade already exists, is that you? Also, I was wondering, does Husband Guy have a LiveJournal?
Dec. 4th, 2002 09:14 am (UTC)
Yes, applejade is mine =)

Nope. Husband Guy doesn't have a journal.
Dec. 5th, 2002 03:06 pm (UTC)
So you have applejade and apple_jade... Interesting.
Dec. 5th, 2002 03:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I hogged up a bunch of LJ usernames in case I wanted them =)
Dec. 6th, 2002 07:47 am (UTC)
Hey, that's not such a bad idea.
