Gawking at my Premier

weather: cloudy
outside: 8°C
mood: amused
music: Placido Domingo - Carmen, Blumenlied (Bizet)

We had dinner at Swiss Chalet tonight (on Broadway & Trutch, not too far from Alma) with some of Husband Guy's family. As I walked in, I saw a silver haired gentleman in a crisp navy suit standing near the doorway. He looked incredibly familiar, like an ex-professor from University or someone I'd worked with, but not that closely or something. But the name had fallen off my brain and run away.

I stared at him for a moment with a quizzical-but-trying-to-be-polite smile. Thinking back, he must get that all the time because he nodded, smiled to me and warmly said hello. I finally gave up trying to fish his name out of my head and greeted him back.

He was waiting for his take-out order which was ready shortly after we came in. It wasn't until we got settled at our table that Husband Guy says quietly to me, "Hey, that's Gordon Campbell..."

It was BC's Premier, Gordon Campbell. He might have been in town visiting Mike Harcourt.

So, I gawked at my Premier tonight. What did you guys do?

Is a premier like a governor?

Yup, he's the leader of leading party in the provincial Legislative Assembly.

We also have a Lieutenant Governor who does nothing - he cuts ribbons and represents the Queen.

No paparazzi? No angry protesters with long sharp teeth nipping at his ankles?

I remember being at Westwood Mall in Coquitlam as a kid with a big ruckus going on. Vander Zalm was giving campaigning (I didn't care about this back then... only wanted to get to Kmart's computer section!) and I guess I got in his way since in walking through this mess, since suddenly this gigantic hand was simultaneously rubbing my head like a pet and pulling me out of the way, kinda those basketball players with uber big hands.

Nope, that's probably why I couldn't place him!! =D There was one RCMP Officer there, but I think he was getting his take-out too and I don't know if he was with the Premier or not.

RCMP dude parked in an illegal spot though - ie. he parked in the middle of the lot's exit driveway. But, granted, that Swiss Chalet parking lot is pretty confusing.

Re: Vander Zalm

Haha, I remember him - "19, 20 & Vander Zalm. 3 Bad Bills" =)
