Poll #90701 Where Are You?

[Update] - D'oh! I meant What LJ cluster are you on? =P Sorry... akiki, diannadinoble, bellajellybean, go change your answer here =D =D Although, I think I can guess... akiki = Chef; diannadinoble = Cartman; bellajellybean = Santa(?)

I'm on Chef. I'm just curious to see where people are. I'm not sure how to find someone else's cluster without asking... And I haven't done a poll in a long time.

Each cluster is a combination of hardware(?), software, web server, database, master, slaves, etc. It was done to make rendering the FRIENDS view more efficient because pulling up a Friends page was the most resource intensive request.

The way it's designed, everyone is assigned a cluster. Lookups within your own cluster would be super fast, lookups across clusters would be a little slower. At best, all your friends are in the same cluster. At worst, none of your friends are in the same cluster as you (which is not very likely and I'm trying to think if that's even possible).

The cluster criteria (how to decide who to put in what cluster) was geographical region (approximately, I think)... I don't know if that's changed. Their reasoning was your LJ Friends are more likely to be in your own region (ie. RL friends). I told them I disagreed with this, that the whole purpose I'm online is specifically to meet people from all over the world - people that I would never have had the chance to talk to otherwise. Why would I go online to only stay in touch with people I can phone or see in person? But I guess I come from a different net.era where internet was for "long distance contact for the price of a local phone call".

I'm pretty sure my friends are all over North America with some overseas, so I expect all kinds of different clusters to show up in the poll. If most of your friends live near you, you'll probably all be in the same cluster.

I think Chef is for people on the west coast, Cartman is for the east coast and Santa is for both the mid-west region, overseas and miscellaneous (ie. people who did not have a location specified at the time they converted).

But then there are a few that I can't figure out... like there's one person in New York that's on the Santa cluster and I'm pretty sure she's been on LJ for a long time. Maybe she entered her location after we got clustered, I dunno...

I'm on Cartman and I'm in Germany -- and told LJ so.

I don't know then... They may have moved people around to even out the clusters. *shrug*

It doesn't mean anything for users, except when they do maintenance on one of the clusters. They took down the Chef cluster yesterday. That's why a lot of people could post yesterday, but we couldn't.

ooo!! thast make sense.. well my friend Nina is from NYC and she couldn't post either :-/

So that's how it works?

And all this time I was thinking that the good kids were with the Santa cluster, the fat kids were on Cartman and all the people who get sweet lovin' are with Chef. Goes to show you what I know!!

Bah, not only did I misunderstand the original poll but by skimming what you added I failed to read carefully, thus I put my geographical location. Gar. Well, I’m Santa cluster. What does this signify, if anything?

You can change your answer here =)

Well, I’m Santa cluster. What does this signify, if anything?

Nope, nothing at all. It should be transparent to users =) The only time it would affect you is if they take down the Santa cluster for maintenance. Then no one in Santa could post.

Yeah, that happened to me a couple times. Is there any rhyme or reason to why someone is put into a cluster?

The last I heard, they said they would split people by geographical region. For the majority of the people who responded to my poll, at least, it looks like people on the West Coast are in Chef; people on the East Coast are in Cartman; and people in the mid-west, overseas plus everyone who didn't put down a location are in Santa.

But there are a lot of exceptions to that, so maybe they changed it or maybe they moved people around so that the clusters were more even. *shrug* I dunno...

Hmm, I’m in the west so it’s odd that I’m not in chef. Oh well, nothing worth leaving sleep over. Maybe I didn’t put in my location…
