Masculine or Feminine

weather: light rain

A good friend of mine posted a link to an online version of the Bem Sex Role Inventory from the Hyde, J. S., "Half the Human Experience", Heath, 1985, Page 97-98. You're supposed to choose on a scale how much certain words apply to you. It's for entertainment purposes only and isn't supposed to mean much.

My results say:

Masculinity Score: 4.15
Femininity Score: 4.36

What does that mean?

You have reported that you characterize your self as having relatively few masculine characteristics as well as having relatively few feminine characteristics.

Huh. I'm ever so slightly more on the girlie side, but I'm neither masculine nor feminine. I guess that makes sense. I'm rather ashamed of humans in general and never quite wanted to be one anyway.

Mine, I don't remember the exact numbers, but remember being rather amused by them.

M: ~ 4.06
F: ~ 5.68

Pretty extreme e? It's not too surprising to me actually, since there has been some discussion in the office in the past if I wasn't gay.

This test probably doesn't apply across cultures, as some roles are reversed. I can't think of ones such as those listed in the test but a custom I've heard is that in Japan, the wife manages all the money (and basically gives her husband an allowance)

You're absolutely right. And gender roles have blurred so much since the early 80's (when the concept for the Hyde text was conceived) that it's fairly meaningless by now.

Re: hmmmm...
For sure! Definitely since the 80s for sure! Guys are pressured to now be understanding, caring, able to cook, emotionally present... among a number of large flips since then. There's mention about these guys who lament how "you have to be nice to girls now".

Related note: They've noticed that what women feel as "attractive faces" in men have changed. From very strong sharp men features that were once very popular to those that are now a little bit more effeminate. They hypothesised that it's probably related to how it's not so important for women to be hooked up with the "alpha-male" these days especially since they were much more independant and instead looked for males that looked like they would be more caring, especially towards their children.
