Pirates of the Caribbean

weather: rainshowers
outside: 17°C
mood: okay
Saw it last night. I've always been indifferent about Johnny Depp's acting. He's always been okay, but not spectacular (21 Jump Street, Sleepy Hollow). But his perpetually drunk Captain Jack Sparrow was funny.

Two words: ELF! BOY!!! =D I keep wanting to refer to "Will Turner" as "Guybrush Threepwood" =)

I really liked this movie for the Secret of Monkey Island type storyline and humour. But it wasn't blatantly verbatim like The Mask of Zorro in that scene where Anthony Hopkins was training Antonio Banderras in swordfighting. That's the only scene I saw from Zorro.

I think anytime JD is allowed to just be a total weirdo and goof onscreen, he's great. Personally, I loved his slightly neurotic and not-quite-there Ichabod in Sleepy Hollow, and I thought he was great in Pirates too. Of course, he was also great in Edward Scissorhands. Oh, and Fear and Loathing... and Ed Wood! Ok, there's a lot of movies he was great in. :)

Incidentally, I'll be in Vancouver from the 14-20th (well, 14-19th effectively) of August.

Hmm... maybe it's been too long since I saw Sleepy Hollow, I didn't think he was that out there. I didn't see Edward Scissorhands or any of the others.

Re: August

Cool, let me know if you want to get together again =) Maybe an out-of-towner is the inspiration vancouver_eats needs to organize an outing. =P

Ah, but he was out there in Sleepy Hollow - everyone was a bit quirky, but he was distinctly different from the rest. It was more subtle than some of his other performances, but it was a great one, I thought. The little mannerisms, the twitches, the slight stuttering, the shifting of his jaw... I dunno, I loved what he did with it. :)

I've attended every single nyc_cuisine meet and the first dc_dining meet, so I'd be all for joining in a vancouver_eats meet. :) (Give me a little time, and I'll make it to at least one event from every lj eating-out community. ;) )

Heehee, get in touch with latraviata for gourmetla if you're ever out that way =D

You should make a passport-like booklet and get it autographed or stamped something when you go to all these dining community things =)

Re: JD slightly neurotic
I saw an interview with him for this film and he said he based his character on one of the most outrageous people he could think of and that was Keith Richards. There was alot more to the interview than that, but that comment about the building of this character stuck with me. ;)

Re: LucasArts rocks =)
In one game, when he approaches someone and says he's a mighty pirate, the pirate guffaws and tells him something along the lines of, "You? A pirate? You look more like a flooring inspector!"
