TAKE THAT, CLIENT!

weather: sunny
outside: 15°C
mood: cheerful
One of the more fun aspects of my project is that I'm looking at different magazines, The New Yorker, Forbes, The Spectator (UK) and... Esquire. The first manual test pass is extra slow because sometimes (especially with the New Yorker, to which I am seriously considering getting a subscription) there's a great temptation to read the articles. =D

The most recent copy I have to work with is the October 2003 issue of Esquire (the 70th Anniversary one with Mohammed Ali "Now and Then" on the cover). The layout is done in QuarkXPress and we get the QXP files about two weeks before they go to press.

Now that it's hit the newsstands, I bought a copy last night to have a comparison. I never buy magazines, especially something like Esquire. What a huge waste — ten pages of content (five of which are production credits and table of contents split across two pages randomly strewn in somewhere) and 90 pages of ads. So, just the thought of me paying good money for a pile of worthless paper, almost gave The Husband a coronary.

Interesting tidbit: Even QuarkXPress was offended by last month's "J. Lo Pinups" issue. It crashed several times before it finally opened the J.Lo file successfully once and then it was a crap shoot from there. It would freeze sometimes, open sometimes and crash sometimes.

I see they've fixed up the spelling and grammar =) The revision I have isn't that hideous, but it's pretty bad.

The one thing I am MOST GLEEFUL about is the Hillary Clinton article on page 186. Flip to this page and there's a caption under the picture of Hillary with her mouth wide open and two thumbs up. There's a freaking ¶! A paragraph symbol right in the middle of that caption.

THAT'S NOT OUR BUG!! THAT'S NOT OUR BUG!! THAT'S NOT OUR BUG!! IT WENT TO PRESS THAT WAY!!!!!!! IT'S VALID CONTENT!!! TAKE THAT, CLIENT!!!!!!!!! =D =D =D AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! *DANCIE* *DANCIE* *TIPPITTY-TAP*

*ahem* Hi. I'm having a fantabulous day so far. =D

Now, it would really make my day if we started getting Bon Appétit magazine. There was an episode of Chef At Large where he went into the research kitchens at Bon Appétit and I saw the Layout Artist working with QuarkXPress *big Cheshire grin* This one would really emphasize one of the design flaws of our project that we've been trying to convince the client of from the beginning. But they didn't seem to get it. We'd be so vindicated as soon as it blows up with Bon Appétit.

Vibe that we get it!! =)

That's hilarious!

And yeah, Esquire tanks. One of my favourite actresses is Laurie Holden - a gorgeous woman with lovely classic looks (like this one). Two years ago when her publicist was sticking her in anything that would take her picture in the leadup to a movie release, this is what Esquire did to her. Ew!
