I was actually really disappointed by the reaction to the space launch - I wrote about it on bokane.org (which I'm trying to set up an LJ RSS feed for, but alas, I haven't got the credits) - it was so muted as to be almost invisible.

Your advice on the best way to learn Chinese is regrettably correct. Oh well - at least I get to answer in more or less the same way when people ask me the best way to learn English.

As for Beijing being Westernised - sure, in the same way that every major world city is. What I like about it is that it's a huge, modern city with pretty much all the amenities that I want (viz.: Indian food), and yet everyone here speaks Mandarin, mostly in a dialect - Beijinghua - that I like a lot. It's perfect for my needs!
