Carcinogenic Red Dye

weather: cloudy
outside: 9°C
mood: interested
So, there is some truth to the saying that "red dye causes cancer". This one's not entirely bitter old hags spouting paranoia shit they know nothing about. I should know, I'm doing my Bitter Old Hag™ Apprenticeship, meself. Except, I'm determined to actually know that of which I spout.

I just received a Health Hazard Alert from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (our equivalent of the FDA) about Sudan I, a carcinogenic red dye(!), that they found in some imported stuff. This alert is not up on the archive list yet, but it should be there by tomorrow.

Emphasis mine:

OTTAWA, October, 23, 2003 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume the certain food products identified below. These products contain, a non-permitted colour, Sudan I, which is considered to be carcinogenic.

The following products are affected by this alert:

Brand and Product
Code Number

Cirio, i Sughi Rustici, all'arrabbiata, with chilli
(Tomato based sauce with chilli), 400 g, UPC 8049 6717
All codes bearing LT 277 and 10-2004
Cirio Alimentare S.P.A., Roma, Italy

1889, Yorkshire or 1889, Shaws, Curried Fruit Chutney
250ml/300g, UPC 0 33393 11135 0
All products with Best before dates up to and including BB 01 02 06
Shaws (Huddersfield) Ltd., Yorkshire, England

The importers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. These products may have been distributed nationally.

Sudan I, a red dye, is not allowed as a food colour in Canada. It has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. Its presence in the above mentioned products was identified in Europe. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall and continuing a food safety investigation. This alert will be updated as needed.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time - Monday to Friday.

I try to stay away from things that obviously have food colouring in it (candy and what-not). But JEEZ, sometimes it's used in a way that you can't tell. >K{

Oh, userinfoBrendan and userinfoKatie, you might have heard already, but apparently there are folks in China that were pumping red dye into watermelons so that they'd sell. I'm not sure where it was, but be careful, eh?
