Engelbert - Release Me

weather: cloudy
outside: 4°C
mood: strange
In the 2003-05-02 Friday Five, the first question was "Name a song you hate to admit you like." I just found another one I can add to that list of mine.

Release Me

Please release me, let me go,
For I don't love you anymore.
To live a lie would be a sin.
Release me and let me love again.

I have found a new love, dear.
And I will always want her near.
Her lips are warm where yours are cold.
Release me, darling, let me go.

Please release me, let me go,
For I don't love you anymore.
To waste our lives will be a sin.
So release, and let me love again.

Please, release me, can't you see
You'll be a fool to cling to me
To live a lie will bring us pain
So release, and let me love again.

I don't like the lyrics. It absolutely does not apply to me or my life at all. I really hate the sentiment. It conveys an attitude of love and relationships that makes me bristle. And it's completely not my type of music. But I find myself bizarrely drawn to the beautiful melody and the way the words flow.

It's performed by Engelbert Humperdinck... gotta love that name. =D

A little trivia for you
Engelbert Humperdinck was the original author of Hansel and Gretel, I do believe. Anyway, one of the fairy tales. When he wanted to become a singer, his agent, who was, incidentally Tom Jones' agent as well, agreed to take him on if he would use the name "Engelbert Humperdinck." So he did and the rest is history.

I'm confused... isn't that a Brother's Grimm fairy tale?

Oh, I see what you're talking about =) This guy was the composer of the 1893 Hansel and Gretel opera.

Oh, I KNOW what you mean. (I absolutely *LOVE* Engelbert Humperdinck, BTW. He could sing the phonebook romatically.) My guilty pleasure is Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman". The song is so very NOT feminist-friendly, and yet I love turning it up to deafaning and singing along loudly with it. It just ... has a good beat I guess. :-}

Aaaa, I like that beat too... you know what's totally not feminist friendly? Wishin' and Hopin', Ani DiFranco. =O

But it's soooo cuuuute =D

"Release Me"

Oh nooooo, not this song! I woke up with it in my head this morn and I can't get it out!

Years ago, I thought I was done hearing this song -- a coworker of mine used to sing it every single day. Especially to the women he was dating. I got an earful of it when he dated my cousin for several years. Think it was his theme song for her.
