Need Help - Valentine's or Birthday?

weather: sunny
outside: 8°C
mood: torn
[This post was originally Friends Only.]

I ordered userinfoHusband Guy a gift from Amazon: SSX 3 Soundtrack. He has SSX 3 for the Playstation 2 and loves it, so I thought he might like to have the music tracks too =)

I had it sent to me at work, but I honestly didn't think it would arrive in time for Valentine's Day, so I had it in mind to give it to him for his birthday (in June). Well, Office Manager Lady dropped off a huge box for me just now — it's the CD. My god, they ship CDs in the most gigantasmic boxes. =D

So, now I don't know when to give it to him: Valentine's or Birthday?

I can wait five months without blowing my cover, that's no problem. I got last year's birthday gift for him in March and kept it hidden until June.

We've never done anything for Valentine's anyway and I'm not sure I want to start now. I really don't want to feel like I'm feeding the Retail Stupidity™. I also don't want him to think that he has to do something for me. I've seen so much psychosis about gifts: remembering, forgetting, how big, not enough, timing and all that drama. I hate it and avoid it like the plague.

But there's a certain amount of *SQUEE* in wanting to give him something that I know he'd like and seeing him happy.

Maybe I've answered my own question, but what do you all think?

[Update - February 14, 2004]

I ended up giving it to him for Valentine's. I couldn't bear to make him wait until June. =}

Happy Valentine's, Sweetheart. =)

I vote for birthday, simply because.

I've never really bought into the whole retail deal, but that's just me. Of course, what's to stop you from giving him a gift just because? I love unbirthday gifts more than birthday gifts, really. *grins* And they're so nice and spontaneous and all that good stuff.

That's true. If it's random, that keeps the expectations (sorta) in check...

Re:
*grins* That's what I think, personally. Am not much for birthdays and things mostly because I always forget the dates.

Give it to him tomorrow. It doesn't have to be for V-day. It can be a just because you're my husband, and I love you kind of present. :)

Re:
I'd almost feel worse giving it to him early because it's still so close to the 14th. It would be like I'm hinting at him or something.

I think I'm going to wait until at least the end of February. Thanks =)

Oh, and I'm digging for my wedding day itinerary. I buried it deeper than I thought... but if you want to get started, go:
  1. open up Excel
  2. type "08:00" in cell A1
  3. type "08:30" in cell A2
  4. click on cell A1
  5. right-click on that black square in the lower right hand corner of cell A1
  6. drag down to A35 (or thereabouts)
  7. when you let go, there should be a pop-up menu
  8. choose the "Series" option
  9. in the pop-up dialogue that comes up, click the "Trend" checkbox
  10. click OK
This will fill in the time in half hour blocks from 8am to 1am the following day. You can make it 15 minute intervals as well. Then I would use column B as "Bride & entourage", column C as "Groom & entourage", D as Bride's Family", E as "Groom's Family", F, G, H, etc. for "Assistants". Then block off your ceremony, reception and other appointments (hair, makeup, exterior photography or whatever).

Re:
Ha =) I said to Katie, I think I'm going to roll a d100 every day. If it lands on "50", I'll just up and give it to him =D

give it to him now! Sounds like something he'd think about getting himself, so you might as well eliminate the chance of that.

I totally know what you mean about the certain amount of *SQUEE* :) I got Robin (or rather, made for Robin) an awesome gift while I was working in the framing store. I basically redid a huge photocollage of panoramics and other assorted photos from our camping trips with his family, and made a new one from our trip to Hawaii. Nice mat background and huge ass frame, everything. But I made it before I started my new job... back in December.

I already had his holiday gift, so I figured I'd wait till Valentine's day. But I almost gave it to him on our half year anniversary cause I was just so darned excited.

Re:
Heehee, they look like golf balls. They're cool to have, but less efficient to use than 2d10 because they roll around, take forever to settle on a number and you have to look at it straight down from the top =D

Wow. I seem to be the only one...
... who would advocate giving it to him tomorrow. Huh.

Why? Well, because it'd be nice. You might not like Retail Stupidity™ but maybe -he- does... and even if he didn't, it's one other day to celebrate your togetherness.

Some people think that every day for married couples can be Valentine's Day. But why not celebrate on the official day too? Couldn't hurt.

I say to go with V day. I would venture to say that most guys would not expect a gift for them on V day. Which makes a gift on the 14th all the better!

Really? But if he didn't get her anything, would he feel awkward?

I believe he would feel extra inclined to do something extra special the next day or a gift next weekend. That's how I'd feel anyway.
