If You're Not Talking About Beer...

weather: ominous clouds
outside: 12°C
mood: serious
... then I don't want to hear about a draft.

No, no. The Snopes entry is a MUST READ and it's syndicated on LJ here.

The general consensus is that it's very likely bullshit, but still a(n) [almost negligible] sliver of possibility.

There would be a fair pool of knowledgeable people in the debate community (at least the more intelligent back-and-forth threads should be a good indicator) and snopes_dot_com should be REQUIRED READING.

And wow, lookit, the Lhasa Apso is not a Tibetan snow rabbit. I coulda been hoodwinked. =D

Does a breeze count? Or rough copy? :p
That's honestly what I thought when you said 'draft.'

No. No breezes. No rough copies. I'm only interested in the beer. =D

Cold draft from window = bad.

Cold draft from tap = GOOD! =)

You know, actually, "Rough Draft Beer" or "Windy Draft Beer" could actually be good microbrew names.

I dunno'bout you, but I'm not consuming anything that calls itself a "rough draft" =}

Oh, but then, I always have people beta testing my food... =)

I served in the military in my early 20's. This is the first I have heard of this bill and I support it. It does not require military service. My daughter is 20 and her boyfriend is 22, I would not want either to be in the military.

The military needs to clean up its act concerning sexual issues which was a mess even when I served around 1977. I knew women who were raped and there wasn't any help or investagations. And the young people acted in immoral, low character (not exactly the word I'm looking for) ways they would not have if they had been at home living around people who knew them.

Not everyone it suited to military service and this bill seems to provide an alternative civilian service. But I am suspicious of the alternative civilian service option, if it will continue to be offered if/after the bill passes.

I don't like the idea of my daughter and her boyfriend serving but I love the US and I am patriotic.

Re: alternative civilian service

I'd heard of that too.

Taiwan has this really moronic draft where anyone BORN in Taiwan, even if they have citizenship in another country (say CANADA or the US) will be drafted if they stay in Taiwan with a travel visa. If you stay for less than 14 days, you don't need a travel visa. The only way for my husband to get around that was to not get a visa, only stay for 13 days in Taiwan, then leave and go to say Hong Kong for a few days and then return for another 13 days.

There was mention of civilian service in Taiwan as well and someone mentioned "substitute service" for a family member. I was SO ALL OVER THAT IDEA like a dirty shirt because I could teach English for a year and then we wouldn't have to hop around when we visit =D But it turns out that I don't qualify to fulfill it for Husband Guy though =P

Which is completely understandable and, in my mind, not at all a contradiction.

"substitute service" for a family member

turns out that I don't qualify

Taiwan's government sounds like US's government.

Ha! I'll be waiting for Bush's staged assassination for sympathy votes.

"substitute service" for a family member

But the funniest thing about that was all the Mulan-esque jokes about me fulfilling military duty for my husband. =D

Good going, bride. Tell the story and forget the punchline... =\
