On My Third Anniversary

weather: sun & cloud
outside: 15°C
mood: cheerful
尺     壁     非     寶
Esteem not a foot of jade,

寸     陰     是     競
But value an inch of time.

上     和     下     睦
May each generation be in accord,

夫     唱     婦     隨
As husband and wife walk in harmony.

Fun trivia that you may not have known about us:

In the 12 years we've been together, userinfohe has never given me flowers.

And yet, I know I'm loved. On the rare occasion that we do argue, I don't get the regular apology bouquet. I don't always get an apology, for that matter. But I always get an earnest attempt to right the wrongs and he gets the same from me. Which is more than flowers, candy, gifts and "sorry" can ever say.

Sweet. Happy Anniversary. :)

What did you guys do?

Seeing the poetry that you're posting is inspiring my design sense. I think I'm going to use something like that as a layer, faded into the background, on the engagement announcment I'm going to make.

Do you have anything that springs to mind that would be suitable?

(My apologies for asking so much of you, I appreciate it!)

You could use that verse exactly =)

My father penned it as the inner title page of my guestbook. They're proverbs taken from this big collection of aphorisms (I should ask him exactly what the collection is). My Dad chose them because they were meaningful without being too "throw-back".

And I think those four aphorisms are so beautiful that I now wish I had used them as my wedding vows. Oh well, maybe on my 10th Anniversary Vow Renewal Ceremony or something =)

Another suggestion: on the front cover of my guestbook, in Dad's brush calligraphy, he penned 良緣. means "perfect", but it's a very understated way of saying "perfect" because, in our family, to actually call something of your own "perfect" is very cocky and boastful. So, to say "oh, it'll do" is essentially a jumping-up-and-down-flag-waving approval =D

I explain the concept of here and there's a 3 line saying in there too about . You could pull out the last line and it would symbolize the entire thing to anyone who knew the saying =)

I can ask Dad if he has any other brilliant ideas. And I'll keep my eye out for neat little tidbits for you =)

Many happy returns
- and may the "engagement" never end. I've found that's what makes all the difference, that willingness to reach out from "I,me,mine" and recognize the "we."

Flowers are an important thing for *me,* though - a small luxury, a moment of beauty that I can provide, something utterly not utilitarian to remind us both of that which is greater than work and chores and projects. A very small link to the numinous.

Which, it seems, you have in abundance in other ways!

Again, my congratulations and best wishes.

And, yes, it's important to find what's meaningful to the both of you and do it =)

Thanks =)

How did you two meet?

*cough* In school =D Math class, no less =) It's funny, he told me a few years into our relationship that he first notice my feet(!) Apparently, I used to slip off my shoes in class and sit there with bare feet resting on top of the shoes. I didn't think anything of it, but I may as well have flashed the entire class =O =O

i don't get flowers either. i got them 3 times, and 2 of those times it was a single rose. i'm really not a flower person. they die, and then i have to dry one out and keep it and joe thinks i'm a nut job. when we fight, we don't say sorry as much as we just try to change what went wrong in the first place....and if anyone was going to be buying flowers, i would have to say that the majority of times i would have to buy for him, and he doesn't like that. i guess everyone has their way of being romantic, ours seems to be "to not be". we're not mushy people, and i think it would be fake coming from either of us...although i do wish for it once in a while.

ok, just rambling on and on, but congrats to both of you on your special day.

We act silly and over the top mushy as a joke to entertain ourselves, but that's about it. =D

Happy Happy Anniversary to you and Husband Guy!! May the two of you have many more happy years together. I love the verse you posted.

I don't know why now, but I feel like saying I have really enjoyed reading your LJ over the past year or so (and thanks for all your help on MY wedding!!!). I even enjoy reading (and believe it or not, re-reading!!) your wedding day.

(While I'm thinking about it...) Really, from a biological point of view... Giving flowers is like giving the flagrantly displayed reproductive organs of a dead plant. =P
