Children's Names

Our newborn neice's name is/was a very pretty girl's name: "linguistic gentleness". Until userinfoHusband Guy and I realized and pointed out to Mother-in-Law that it sounds like 蒟蒻 (jǔruò; "konnyaku"), 魚肉 (yúròu; fish meat) or 魚油 (yúyóu; "fish oil").

OMG. I just realized as I was writing, that in combination with a homophone of her last name, it's 淋魚油 (lín yúyóu) which is, literally, "pour fish oil". Did no one think of this? Or did no one want to say anything? *boggle* There's no changing it now. >K{

It kinda reminds me of Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing.

Anyway, I will be using the girl's English name. At least they liked my suggestion to call her "Rachel" and didn't try to be unique with the English name as well. The potential for disaster there could have been great. We used to know a girl named ... *wince* Nevermind, I don't even want to say it.

While I'm at it, Chinese parents, I beseech you: make sure you get an opinion on the Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciations regardless of the community you tend to flock with. What sounds beautiful in one dialect can sound like something really awful in another. In this day and age of cross-culture courtships even within the Chinese ethnicity itself, in-law families that speak a different dialect are quite common.

I speak from personal experience. -_-
