There have been a few gems. El Laberinto del Fauno, for example. El Laberinto del Fauno was very enjoyable, but 1408 is impressive.
Husband Guy had watched it and told me about it. What's even more impressive is that I was impressed with just his clumsy description of it. Events happening out of order and all.
It strikes me that it's a fairly metaphoric representation of what a life with mental illness might be like. Being tormented by weird things happening to you and not understand, not being able to make any sense of any of it. Like the constant emotional and physical pain and exhaustion of living a lucid nightmare with no way out.
And sometimes, it seems to get better and things are relatively normal, which I imagine coinciding with medication and/or therapy. But then realizing that the good days never last and you're still trapped in that nightmare.
And the only way out is to die.
