Chinese Drama Series - 大 宅 門

I was up till 3:00am last night to finish watching this Chinese soap. 大 宅 門 literally means "the large gate of an old-style Chinese mansion" and usually refers to the family living there.

It's about the Yuen family of Beijing that is infamous for their Chinese medical practice and chain stores. A lot of modern Chinese medicine products (like bak-fong-yuen) was originally their recipe. The executive producers changed the surname to Bai for dramatic flair - we know because Husband Guy's Grandma knows one of the Yuen daughters from University.

It follows the family from about 1870 to about 1940. That's just my best guess because in the beginning, the Empress CiXi was still in power and part of the plot involved CiXi's rivalry with her son's concubines. It ends off during the Japanese occupation of China - July 1937 to the end of World War II in August 1945.

The story started off really interesting. The local Beijing Mandarin dialect was really interesting to me and took a while to get used to. They were a hugely wealthy family of about 20 adults, at least 2+ children at any given moment, and about 50 or more serving staff. Their birthdays, weddings and funerals always looked like parades, several blocks long and were just massive productions.

In the beginning, it was a rollercoaster ride of family, community and local Beijing politics. By the end, I just wanted to kill all the men.
